John Hilliard Coastal Light

John Hilliard‘s art investigates the nature of light. Inspired by walks along beaches, his images are not in any way topographical but explorations of the interplay between light, reflected light, sea and sky. The moods and atmospheres expressed in these pictures...

INTRODUCTION

Bertram Arts was established in 2005 to promote Somerset artists. It was set up by myself, Geoffrey Bertram, upon  moving to Somerset after a career working in art galleries in Edinburgh (Aitken Dott & Son/The Scottish Gallery), Toronto (Theo Waddington Galleries/Waddington & Shiell) and London (The Scottish Gallery, and as founding Director of Art First). Bertram Arts promoted the work of selected Somerset artists through exhibitions and art fairs, from London to Glasgow. The business was closed when I retired in 2020.  HOWEVER…….Over time I have acquired many artworks to support artists which I offer here. The diversity reflects the broad interest and skills of the wonderful artists whom I have had the good fortune to work with throughout my career. Please email me if you would like to make a purchase or require further information – geoffrey@bertram-arts.com

Simultaneous to directing Bertram Arts, I was the curator for the Art for Life programme at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton between 2008 and 2012, organising their art exhibitions and sourcing art for the hospital environment. From 2005 to March 2019 I chaired the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, a charity established by the renowned St Andrews/St Ives artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham CBE (1912-2004).

In 2012 I wrote and published The Etchings of John Clerk of Eldin to mark the 200th anniversary of the artist’s death (see www.clerkofeldin.com), available here at reduced price for Bertram Arts visitors. This project led to establishing a collection of Old Master prints on the theme of landscape, published between 1500 and 1820. Since 2012 the collection has grown to more than 600 etchings and engravings by over 280 artist/engravers. In order to return the collection to a manageable size I am releasing a few choice prints which are available to buy from a dedicated section on this web site.
